Shlomo’s garin founded Kibbutz Chatzerim
Main jobs in the Palmach
While at Afikim they began a routine of working for a two week period and then training as members of the Palmach for two weeks. Main job in the Palmach Training included knowing the night, understanding how to orient oneself in the dark. They walked miles upon miles without making a sound. They learned how to shoot. Shlomo was sent almost every other night to Arab villages to sense what was going on, as he knew Arabic. They blew up bridges among other activities. They defended Afikim when two thousand British soldiers with tanks and trucks came to locate illegal immigrants. (See pages 28, 29, 30, 31 in “History” .
Main Activities and operations you participated in (1941-1949)
While at Ayanot Shlomo was among the few men who guarded the settlement in December, 1947.
On May 14, 1948 Shlomo received the following order ”You are called up for army duty today. Go to the central building at seven pm and from there you will move on. “ As one of his duties he dug trenches at Ayanot and set up anti tank fortifications there. On July 17, 1948 six members of Chatzerim set out for Kibbutz Ruhuma to bring back ammunition and arms. On July 2 Shlomo began guard duty in pillbox number 5 which was located a hundred meters from the road that goes from Beersheba to Chan Junis. On Yom Kippur eve of 1948 Shlomo received an order to leave Chatzerim for active duty at Bir Asluj. He and two other members, Farul and Monia, left Chatzerim along with three representatives of each of the eleven kibbutzim founded on Rosh Hashana to reate a harassing force on the road leading to Beersheba. After arriving at Asluj they went to mishlat hagevul, the Vantage Point of the Border--The Big Lookout. There they were stationed. They actively took command and organized the “soldiers” , among them many immigrants, in digging trenches below the 600 armed Egyptians stationed above them. (see pages 81-83 in “History”)
