Fighter Popik Meir Michael Miki

Meir (Michael, Miki) Popik was born on May 11th, 1930. He grew up in the town of Levice in Czechoslovakia. In  1944, at the age of 13, Miki and his family were sent to Auschwitz. Miki survived against all odds, the sole holocaust survivor from his entire extended family. His inspiring story was depicted in the book The Boy Who Outwitted Mengele (2018). 

 In May 1948, after a period in a displaced persons camp in Bratislava, Miki immigrated to Israel. In June 1948 he was drafted to the IDF, and was assigned to the 6th Battalion of the Harel Brigade of the Palmach and to the brigade's HQ. He served in Latrun and in the convoys heading to besieged Jerusalem, and was released from the army in 1951. At the beginning Miki lived in Lod, and afterwards he moved to Bat Yam, until finally immigrating to the US. Miki married Esther Grynspan, and the couple gave birth to three girls: Frida, Anita and Vivian.

Miki Popik passed away on June 29th, 2019.

His story was told by his daughter, Frida Glucoft, in August 2024.

מאיר (מיכאל, מיקי) פופיק נולד ב-11 במאי 1930. הוא גדל בעיירה לוויצה בצ'כוסלובקיה. בשנת 1944, בהיותו בן 13, מיקי ומשפחתו נשלחו לאושוויץ. מיקי שרד כנגד כל הסיכויים, ניצול השואה היחיד מכל משפחתו המורחבת. סיפורו מעורר ההשראה תואר בספר "הילד שהערים על מנגלה" (2018).

במאי 1948, לאחר תקופה במחנה עקורים בברטיסלבה, עלה מיקי לישראל. ביוני 1948 גויס לצה"ל, ושובץ לגדוד השישי של חטיבת הראל של הפלמ"ח ולמפקדת החטיבה. הוא שירת בלטרון ובשיירות לירושלים הנצורה, ושוחרר מהצבא ב-1951. תחילה מיקי התגורר בלוד, לאחר מכן עבר לבת ים, ולבסוף היגר לארה"ב. מיקי התחתן עם אסתר גרינשפן, ולזוג נולדו שלוש בנות: פרידה, אניטה וויויאן.

מיקי פופיק נפטר ב-29 ביוני 2019.
