אריה-ארתור גבירץ נולד בניו-יורק ב-23 בינואר 1925 להוריו קייט ומקס. בשנת 1948 התנדב לצה"ל במסגרת מח"ל והתגייס לפלמ"ח. הוא שרת במחלקת הג'יפים של הגדוד התשיעי בחטיבת הנגב. לקח חלק בין השאר בכיבוש באר שבע. המשך סיפור חייו מתואר באנגלית מפי בנו גרי גבירץ: Activities in the Palmach Date of Mobilization to the Palmach (month, year): 1948 Formation/Hachshara: Platoon Regiment/Brigade: 12th Unit/Jeep Brigade Your Main jobs in the Palmach (job, date, place, unit- if possible): Arthur Gewirtz drove a jeep over a period of a few weeks. Main Activities & Operations you Participated in (1941-1949): Arthur Gewirtz enlisted in the Machal, joined the Palmach, and was assigned to a jeep brigade where he participated in the Battle of Beersheba, October 20-21, 1948. Arthur Gewirtz also later volunteered as a civilian in the Yom Kippur War where he drove a vehicle. On the occasion of Arthur Gewirtz's 90th birthday, he videotaped a testimonial of his service in the Palmach, and the Yom Kippur War, as well as his family's service in Israel. The testimonial is on a DVD that is being provided to the Palmach House by mail. D. Your Civil Occupations/Education/Publications: Arthur Gewirtz received a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Brooklyn College, and he earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from Columbia University. His thesis for his Master's Degree, which was published, is entitled "Why Parents Send Their Children To A Jewish Community Center". Arthur Gewirtz initially worked at Jewish Community Centers where he directed them, and later went on to serve for more than 30 years as the Executive Director of the Crime Prevention Association in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Crime Prevention Association is a social service agency, which operated Day Care Centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, Senior Citizen Programs, Youth Service Programs, Get Set Centers, and other social service programs. Arthur Gewirtz also served in small communities as a Rabbi during High Holidays for several years, and frequently volunteered at synagogues.
