Female Officers in the Palmach (Striking Force)

The decision to train women for commanding positions did not become realized on the battle field itself. Only a few fought together with the men and commanded small forces; most of the female Officers held support and administration positions as Welfare & relief units Commanders, Army personnel management Officers, Company and Unit Commanders.
Only A few women trained to be Officers up until the 1940's, and in the summer of 1942 3 women participated in a squad Commander training course held in the grove of Mishmar Ha'emeq. The women trained together with the men at the beginning. Men and women trainings were separated and female course graduates commanded women courses as a result of the women's convention held in Mishmar Ha'emeq (September, 1943). In spite of female Officers growing numbers; there were still training courses (such as special unit courses) where trainings were communal.
Men and women trained together in squad and platoon Commanders training courses because of the small numbers of women participants.
3 female members were allowed for the first time to participate in platoon Commanders training course: Hava Admon, Surik'e Brwerman and Elka Brosh. Only a few women participated in the next courses.
A certain quota of 'Hachshara' (groups of young men and women who joined the Palmach out of their Youth Movments) female members participated in various courses, including commanding courses, as a result of the growing numbers of women in Palmach units, and according to the Hachsharot (groups of young men and women who joined the Palmach, some of them, from their youth movements.) agreement.
Shosh Spectore was the most senior enlisted female Officer from the Palmach establishment and up until the war of independence and onwards. After graduating from Hagana platoon Commanders training course she became an army personnel management Officer, and with the establishment of the I.D.F during the war she became female Palmach members' Officer.
Unit and squad female Commanders were integrated into the Brigades and held support positions on the eve of the war of independence. A few still fought in the front and commanded male units.
Palmach female members participated during the war in professional courses, including Brigade squad Commanders training courses and platoon Commanders training courses.
As the number of female Palmach members grew during the war so did the number of female Officers integrated into Women' Corps Battalions established in June, 1948.
The decision to train women for commanding positions did not become realized on the battle field itself. Only a few fought together with the men and commanded small forces; most of the female Officers held support and administration positions as Welfare & relief units Commanders, Army personnel management Officers, Company and Welfare and Relief Unit Commanders.
Only "high" Officer Shosh spector stayed in the I.D.F for a short time (until 1951). The rest of the female Officers were discharged after the Palmach dismantling. Some of the junior Officers that remained in the I.D.F became senior Officers in the Women' Corps.
They became Palmach and I.D.F Officers thanks to their training as fighters.
