The War of Independence
The War of Independence of the Jewish people in the land of Israel, began the day after the UN Assembly's decision, on the 29th of November 1947, as a result of the Arabs’ objection to the decision regarding the partition of the country into an Arab state and a Jewish state.

At first (from 30.11.1947 to 3.4.1948) the Palmach's brigades and the Haganah's field brigades conducted defensive operations against operations initiated by the Arabs in the country, who were supported by semi-compulsory volunteers from Arab countries. The Etzel and Lechi executed counterattacks on a small scale. The main effort was to preserve transport routes and communications with the remote settlements.
During the second phase (from 4.4.1948 to 14.5.1948) the Haganah forces took the initiative and launched successful attacks against the Arabs, based on Plan D. At the end of this phase, the force of Palestinian Arabs was broken.
During the third phase (from 15.5.1948 to 11.6.1948), five Arab armies invaded the borders of the partition, and the Jewish forces, which would later become IDF, stopped their advance.
In the fourth phase - the Ten Day Battles (from 9.7.1948 to 19.7.1948) - the IDF switched to the offensive, after a month of ceasefire, in order to release the grip of the Arab armies on the country.
During the fifth phase - the largest attack – saw the last battles. The IDF had the initiative, and moved the battlegrounds into enemy territory, especially on the Egyptian front.
The war officially ended with the ceasefire agreements between Israel and the Arab countries that participated in the war, that were signed from February to July of 1949.
These agreements defined the borders of the State of Israel until 1967.
