In the midst of July 1947, the Hagana HQ ordered the Palmach HQ to sabotage – for the third time – the two British radar facilities stationed on Mt. Carmel. The attack was executed on the night of July 21st to the 22nd. Two forces from the 1st Battalion gradually executed it – one after the other. The sabotage of the radar stations was the only overland military operation executed by the Hagana after the 'Night of the Bridges' in June 1946, due to the limitations enforced on the organization by the political rank. The approval of the operation was given in response to the deportation of the "Exodus" Haapala ship ("Exodus from Europe 1947") from Israel on July 19th 1947. The operation was intended to emphasize the determined struggle for the continuation of Haapala to the extent of using military force. In light of the change in the political circumstances during 1947 due to discussions held UN institutions about Israel's fate, this was also the last overland military operation of the Hagana in the entire battle period against the British.
After the previous attack on the radar in the French Carmel (in February 1946), the British restored the facility. The Sixth Airborne Division was located next to it. Another radar station, called 'The Small Radar,' was stationed in the center of an army base located in the Eastern Carmel, in the outskirts of Achuza neighborhood. The facility was guarded by Arab watchmen. Both radar stations were surrounded by barbed-wire and landmines.
