Settlements founded and expanded by Palmach Hachsharot

Nahal (pionner combatant youth) groups, graduates of youth movements having completed their service in the Palmach, founded 36 new settlements from 1944 to 1949.
Even after the end of World War II, when youths were no longer required by national institutions to join the fighting forces, enlistment in Hachsharot (groups of young men and women) from youth movements and youth organizations (Youth Aliya) supplied the Palmach with a (relatively) large, unique and fixed reserve force that played a leading and influential role (both quantitatively and qualitatively) in the Palmach. As a result, the ties between the Palmach and settlement movements were reinforced. After the framework of the recruited Hachsharot was adopted by all the youth movements, the Palmach had at its disposal a reserve force for settlement activities, and for a certain period the Palmach itself operated a settlement organization that founded new settlements.
