The Israeli Air Force started to take form at the beginning of 1948 with a few light trainer planes. The pilots were members of Palmach from the flight unit and Jewish pilots who served with the Allied Forces during the Second World War. Two flight squadrons were established during the War of Independence. The initial activities of the Galilee squadron included reconnaissance, patrols, aerial photography, escorting convoys and supplying provisions to isolated settlements. Later, with the transfer of one plane to the Negev, it was decided that the Galilee squadron would serve the security needs of the Galilee and the new Negev squadron, established 12/3/48, would be responsible for the south.
