The Palmach’s companies in Italy

The founding of Palmach companies in Europe was but one factor in the struggle against the British which was initiated by David Ben Gurion, the chairman of the Jewish Agency, in November 1945. The responsibility for its realization was passed to the Hagana’s branch in Europe, under the leadership of Nahum Sadmi.
The plan was called ‘Alia Gimel’ (illegal immigration C). It was based upon the belief that it would be possible to train four thousand men with in a year long effort and with the aid of Israeli instruction and commanding forces. The plan’s goal was to train the illegal immigrants before their departure from Europe and prepare them to fight against the British forces when they would take control of their ships or during the break in and landing in Palestine, together with the Hagana members which would wait ashore.
The plan to set up the Palmach companies in Europe began to realize when Yosef Artrakht (El- Nehem) arrived in Italy in June 1946 and acted to form two companies in Northern Italy. The Palmach camps set up at the end of August were called ‘Ha’ashara Tzovit’ (ranger training) as the recruits and their instructors pretended to be the Joint’s workers.
