Politics and Public Life
Former Palmach members avoided any kind of political activity as a rule. Furthermore, all political stations were already occupied by politicians from the previous generation who worked in the Knesset (The Israeli parliament), the Jewish Agency, local authorities etc.
Moshe Dayan and Yigal Alon were the first former Palmach members to enter politics, followed by younger members such as: Gavriel-Gabi Cohen, Shulamit Aloni and Danny Rozolio. As Palmach members completed their army service many of them joined the Knesset including: Yitzak Rabin, Haim Bar-Lev, Me'er Pa'eel, Rafael ("Raful") Eitan, Rechavam Ze'evi ("Gandi"), Adda Sireni-Finberg and Yoash Zidon. Knesset candidates also included the industrialist Steff Werthaimer and the author Moshe Shamir. Amongst other parliament members were a young Palmach member, Yair Tzaban and Palyam member, Tamar Eshel, all in all, 16 former Palmach members became parliament members.
Yitzhak Rabin served as Prime Minister and Yigal Alon was deputy Prime Minister; six former Palmach members became ministers in the government including: Moshe Dayan, Haim Bar-Lev, Rafael Eitan, Shulamit Aloni and Yair Tzaban. Uzi Narkis was the director of the Jewish Agency Aliya Department for many years and Moshe Shamgar served as the Chief Justice.
Over the years, former Palmach members served as heads of many local authorities.
Over Twenty former Palmach members were honored with "The Israel Prize", among them: Gad Avigad( Exact Sciences) , Yehuda Amichai( Hebrew Poetry), Haim Hefer( Hebrew Song Writing), Yoel De-Malach ( Life's work in Desert Research), Haim Guri( Hebrew Poetry), Moshe Shamir( Hebrew Literature), Zvi Yavetz( Humanities), Steff Werthaimer(for special contribution to society and state), Moshe Lisk( Social Sciences), Gidon Goldenberg (Hebrew Linguistics), Eliezer Shavid (Judaic Studies), Snior Lipson (Chemistry), Natan Sharon (Chemical Research), Yehuda Amir (Psychological Research), Ben-Tzion Orgad (Music), Yehuda Bauer (Research of Jewish History), Dan Tzur (Architecture), Amalia Kahanah-Karmon (Literature), Micha Bar'am (Photography), Shulamit Aloni ( for special contribution to society and state), Avraham Halevi (Agriculture), Bracha Ramot (Medicine), Zaharira Charifaee (Theatre), Shabtai Tevet (life's work). Yitzhak Rabin won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.
Former Palmach members' recipients of the Yigal Alon Prize for Exemplary Pioneering Activities until 2007 were: Nachum Sarig, Me'erkeh Davidzon, Yitzhak (Tulka) Arad, Mula Cohen, Dan Ram, Steff Werthaimer, Menashe Harel, Shmuel Tenox And Dita Perach.
Some existing museums which portray the History of Israel include: The Palmach Museum, the Haganah Museum, the Ha'apala Museum, Yigal Alon Museum and Ju'ara Museum. Many Palmach Monuments and Memorials commemorating its legacy, and can be found where Palmach battles were fought before and after the War of Independence.In addition, the Palmach has a comprehensive website.
