The ' Golani' Brigade expedition from the Arava to Um-Rashrash
On the 5th of March, 1949, 'Golani' Brigade left the Kurnub assembly area on its way to Um-Rashrash. The force arrived at Um-Rashsrash on the afternoon of the 10th of March, after defeating the Arab legion. The 'Negev' Brigade arrived at Um-Rasrash via the Mt. Negev.
On the dawn of the 5th of March, 1949, a 'Golani' Brigade convoy left the Kurnub assembly area (Mamshit). The convoy included Brigade staff, the 13th battalion, the 19th Mobil raiding force, 9th battalion armored platoon, a 65 mm cannon battery, 75 mm cannon battery and an engineering force. On the 7th of March they arrived in Ein-Husub and captured the deserted Ein-Wiba. On the eve of the 8th of March, 1949, the Brigade reached Be'er Menuha after flanking and defeating an Arab legion force. On the 9th of March, 'Golani' fighters drove away the Jordanian force occupying the posts opposite the Jerandel and as a result Arab legion Commander; Galab Pasha ordered the evacuation of Mandatory Israel. On the 10th of March, 'Golani' Brigade arrived at Um-Rashrash 2 hours after the arrival of the 'Negev' Brigade. The Brigade Commanders, Nahum Sarig and Nahum Golan used 'Golani' 9th battalion wireless in order to send the following telegram:
"Notify the Israeli government: On Yud Alef Be'adar, defense day, Palmach 'Negev' Brigade and 'Golani' Brigade present the state of Israel with the Eilat bay.
Eilat (Um-Rashrash) Tait Be'adar, Tashat".
