The Blowing Up of a House in the Tel Amal Neighborhood

On the night of 16thJanuary 1948, a unit from the 'Emek' Battalion attacked a house in the Tel Amal neighborhood of Haifa. The building served as a transit station for gangs, and snipers fired, from within, both at the neighborhood and at transport on Mount Carmel. There were also sniper positions in adjoining houses.
The force set off from the Neve Sha'anan neighborhood at 00:50, reaching Tel Amal within half an hour. At 02:00 officers visited the deployment position, which was also to provide cover. At 02:15 those providing fire cover took up positions and the force quietly approached the house. It was not spotted until it blew up the locks on the window shutters. Shots were fired from within the house and the covering team returned fire.
The sappers and people carrying the explosives decided to detonate them from outside. When these were ready they withdrew to a safe place, where they waited a few minutes for the blast. meanwhile treating those who had been (lightly) wounded. Following the explosion the force withdrew to the 'Maonot Ovdim' district, and when the blockading force joined it, continued to Neve Sha'anan.
The house was almost completely destroyed.
