On the night of 15.2.48 a militia of the Galil Battalion carried out a raid on the Arab village of Sasa which was located in the Upper Galilee, about 25 kms. inside enemy territory. This was the deepest penetration of the adversary's terrain since the end of the War. After the failure of the Lamed Heh (35th) Platoon it was important to the Palmach leadership that a successful operation be performed, in order to prove that it could cover large distances in enemy territory. The village was situated at an important crossroad which served as a crossing point for gangs and military forces that penetrated from Lebanon and Syria. It has 1500 residents of whom about 300 were armed fighters.
The aim of the action was to blow up 20 houses and harm as many fighters as possible. This was based on the assumption that if the operation succeeded, the Arabs would be forced to siphon off forces to protect the villages.
