The 9th battalion raids of the Rafiah area

'Negev' Brigade no.9 raiding force raided Egyptian army bases in the Rafiah- Han-Yunis sector as part of an operational deception.
The no.9 raiding battalion included 700 fighters: a jeep company, an armored company, a half-track company and the 'French Commando' that included 100 fighters.
On the night of the 15th-17th of October, jeeps and 'French Commando' raided Egyptian army bases in the Rafiah-Han-Yunes sector, during which ''French Commando' deputy Commander, Eli Oberlander was killed and a Nirim scout, Ya'acov Bracha was pronounced missing.
'Negev' Brigade cavaliers sabotaged the railroad tracks leading from El-Arish to Rafiah and were forced to retreat leaving their horses behind. The Egyptians claimed they drove away 2,000 Israeli soldiers out of an entire force of 40,000 soldiers.
