Yazur Operation

The Arab village Yazur (today the town Azur) was on the main road leading from Tel-Aviv to Haifa, just east of Mikveh – Israel, from where Arabs, encouraged by sector leader, Hassan Salama, attacked Jewish transport.
After a convoy had been attacked twice within 3 days (9.12, 12.12.47) tenders were sent each morning from opposite directions, and only when they met were the convoys sent.
A Notrim [Jewish guard brigade in the British police force during the British Mandate period (1917-1948)] tender under the command of Eliyahu Shamir (Elick) was attacked on the 22.1.48, while examining the possibility of a convoy driving through the town.
While the convoy waited in Mikveh- Israel, the tender arrived in Yazur and was stopped by a road block, where dozens of armed locals opened fire and ignited the tender. Although the Notrim tried to defend themselves from a near by building, they were outnumbered, and the Arab assassins murdered them and mutilated their bodies. A tender arriving from Rishon Le'zion to Mikveh- Israel reported the incident, followed by a British truck announcing the death of all 7 Notrim. Amos Kinamon notified the British commander of his intention to retrieve the bodies accompanied by a bus driver a few armed volunteers and the British commander himself who intimidated the Arabs with his machine gun. Thanks to his intimidation Palmach members were able to retrieve the bodies and transfer them to the hospital. Chish and the Palmach retaliated as a result against Yazur and against transport arriving in and out of Jaffa.
