Results of the Operation

Operation “Maccabi” is regarded by some as one of the most important operations of Israel’s War of Independence; indeed, as the operation which decided the outcome of the war, leading as it did to the opening of the road to Jerusalem.
Operation "Maccabi” achieved the following:
The “Harel” brigade drove the enemy from the outposts in the Sha’ar Hagai area, and took control of them.
The base at Beit Mahsir was captured.
An additional section of the road to Jerusalem was opened to traffic.

Operation “Maccabi” is regarded by some as one of the most important operations of Israel’s war of independence; indeed, as the operation which decided the outcome of the war, leading as it did to the opening of the road to Jerusalem. The struggle for Jerusalem, and for the approaches to it, was a top priority among our war aims, and the operation which gave us these was therefore of the first importance.

Objectives which were not achieved:

The stretch of road from Latrun to Sha’ar Hagai was not captured.
“Harel” and “Givati” brigades were unable to link up.
Convoys were still unable to get through.

Those killed were: Shmuel Ashkenazi; Yerahmiel Globovsky; Eliezer Glazer; Eliyahu Weber; Reuven Wacker; Avraham Hefetz; Aryeh Jung; Rafael Lidgi; Zeev Mizrav; Pinhas Niri; Ya’aqov Solovitz; Peretz Zuckerman; Zvi Shayovitz; and Eliezer Shmuckler (Note: those killed at the capture of Beit Mahsir, are named in that paragraph).
