"Dalin" was bought by 'Hamossad for Aliyah Bet' members while under construction.
The ship was prepared for departure in port Monopoli, Italy by a crew that included Arieh Chaikind, Yisrael Chovav and Jewish soldiers from Transportation unit 468 of the British army. The captain of the ship was Enrico Levy. The ship commander was Palyam member Yisrael Charakovsky (Chorev.) Arieh Chaikind (fell in May 1948 during the battle over San-Simeon monastery in Jerusalem) was the 'Gidoni.'
"Dalin" sailed from Monopoli on August 21st 1945, with 37 immigrants on board.
The ship safely arrived at Sdot-Yam shore on August 28th, without being spotted by the British. The immigrants were unloaded using five Palyam boats, and were dispersed among nearby settlements.
Party delegates and Palyam wireless radio operators, who were assigned to man other Haapala ships, joined the "Dalin" on its return to Italy (among them were: Avraham Reiss, Moshe Rabinovitch, Yisrael Rotem, Eliezer Varsh and Peter Hoffman).
