"The Jewish Soldier" sailed from Antwerp Port in Belgium on July 14th 1946, with 512 immigrants on board. The ship, which waved a Swedish flag, had previously served as a passenger ship between shores. At first, the captain and seamen refused to navigate the ship, but reconsidered it for a (false) promise that at some point between Cyprus and Syria, the immigrants would be transferred to another ship, while they turned around with the ship. During the voyage, the foreign crew demanded to change the destination to Cyprus; in response, the escorts took over the ship with the help of some 40 immigrants, and led it directly to Haifa port. "The Jewish Soldier" arrived in Israel on July 31st; three days later, its immigrants were unloaded and transferred to Atlit detention camp. At first, the escorts hid on board the ship, and escaped later on without being caught.
