Noris – Orde Wingate

"Orde Wingate" sailed from Trebizo port on March 14th 1946, with 238 immigrants on board.
The Haapala ship, "Orde Wingate" (named after the British officer who founded and commanded the Special Night Squads – S.N.S, and died during WWII) was prepared to depart for Israel from Trebizo port in Italy. The captain of the ship was Mario Canada (an Italian.) The ship commander was Palyam member David Ben-Horin. The 'Gidoni' was Avraham Reiss. And additional escort was Palyam member Arieh Weissman.
"Orde Wingate" sailed from Trebizo port on March 14th 1946, with 238 immigrants on board. The Hagana in Tel-Aviv together with Palmach forces, prepared for a joint operation: "Operation "Nachshon" (best known as: "Wingate Night"), to secure the arrival of the ship in Tel-Aviv, so as to break the embargo the British placed on the country's shores. Many forces from the Tel-Aviv Field Corps, and the 2nd and 4th Palmach Battalions, spread across the city on the eve of March 25th. But the British spotted the ship that night, and a destroyer made it stop at 23:00, after firing a number of scare shots towards it. According to an order received from the shore, once the British took over the ship, Reiss threw his radio and codes overboard while tied to a bag of coals as weights. "Orde Wingate" was forced to reach Haifa port and its immigrants were taken to detention at Atlit. The escorts disguised as immigrants and were released from the camp in various ways.
In a firing incident between the Palmach squad that lined up on Marmorak Street (to block the access to the shore), and the British guard, the Squad Commander, Bracha Fuld, was killed.
