Rafael Luccia – Kadima [go for it]
"Kadima" sailed from the island of Plasterina, north of Venice, on November 5th 1947, with 794 immigrants on board.
The Haapala ship, "Kadima" was prepared by its escorts to depart for Israel from a peninsula near Venice, Italy. The ship commander was Ze'ev Rotem. The 'Gidoni' was Moshe Belchovsky. Additional escorts were Palyam members Ze'ev Paz and Chaim Winkler, and Nira Harari.
"Kadima" sailed from the island of Plasterina, north of Venice, on November 5th 1947, with 794 immigrants on board. According to plan, "Kadima" was scheduled to absorb the immigrants of the "Aliyah" ship at sea, but the meeting never took place, since "Kadima" was spotted by the British earlier on ("Aliyah" managed to break through the embargo and secretly entered the country.) A British reconnaissance aircraft spotted the ship on November 15th, and a few hours later, the ship was followed by British destroyer all the way to its arrival at Haifa port the next day. The immigrants were transferred to the "Ranimid Park" deportation ship without resisting and were taken to Cyprus. Chaim Winkler and Nira Harari joined the immigrants who were transported to Cyprus. The remaining escorts hid in a 'Slik' on board the ship. They were later rescued by a team of 'Solel Boneh' cleaners.
