"Medinat Israel" sailed from Brindisi Port in Italy on May 8th 1948, with 243 immigrants on board. "Medinat Israel" was supposed to meet the Haapala ship, "Lanitzachon" near the island of Crete, and continue with it up to 200 miles from the Israel shores, where it would absorb the immigrants and foreign crew and continue to Israel. But on May 14th, it was decided not to execute the transfer but to continue together all the way to Israel. "Medinat Israel" arrived at the Tel-Aviv shore on May 17th, two days after the Declaration of Independence; it safely and openly disembarked its immigrants and returned to Italy with "Lanitzachon" on May 19th.
