Rondine – Enzo Sereny
"Enzo Sereny" was a new ship. It sailed from a port north of Savona on January 9th 1946, with 908 immigrants on board.
The "Enzo Sereny" Haapala ship (named after the paratrooper-delegate who was caught and killed in Dachau in November 1944) was prepared for its mission in Savona port, Italy, by the local crew, the ship's escorts and members of 'Hamossad for Aliyah Bet.' The ship commander was Palyam member Zalman Perach. The 'Gidoni' was Gershon Etsion. An additional escort was Palyam member Gad Lesker.
"Enzo Sereny" was a new ship. It sailed from a port north of Savona on January 9th 1946, with 908 immigrants on board. It was the first attempt to carry such a large number of immigrants after the Haapala endeavor was renewed. British destroyers located the ship at sea and took it over. The radios and code were thrown overboard earlier on. The destroyers forced the ship to sail to Haifa port, where it arrived on January 17th. The immigrants were unloaded and taken to detention at Atlit camp. The escorts and foreign crew intermingled with the immigrants, and were released two weeks later with certificates (immigration papers.)
On January 20t, in response to capturing "Enzo Sereny," a Palmach unit raided the coastal police station at Giv'at-Olga and sabotaged it for the second time. Another attempt to sabotage the radar facility on Mt. Carmel in Haifa ended in failure.
