During ‘Operation Dani’ the IDF took control of the towns of Lydda and Ramleh (as well as the main air field and Lydda railway station) and of a large number of villages in their neighbourhood and in the Modi’in region.
According to the Operation plan it was determined the 3rd Battalion and the 7th Brigade would occupy Lydda in a combined operation. As the 7th Brigade did not arrive in time it was decided to use the 89th Battalion of the 8th Brigade (under the command of Moshe Dayan).
On July 11th at 10:00 hours Ramleh surrendered. The ‘Kiriati’ Brigade started to round up the men and put them in camps ready to move them to prisoner of war camps. At the same time they started to search for and to confiscate weapons.
On the morning of July 12th the deployment of the 3rd Battalion in Lydda was complete, a town of 35,000 inhabitants.
