The battle for the eastern sector
Various constraints forced the General Staff to reduce the Stage Two Plan. It became clear that the U.N. was about to declare another cease-fire. This increased the necessity to achieve facts on the ground speedily. It was decided to relinquish the goal of capturing Ramallah and to concentrate on capturing Latrun and securing the water pipeline from Rosh-HaAyin to Jerusalem.
On the night of 13 July the 6th Battalion from ‘Harel’ Brigade captured the village of Tzuba.
On the night of 14 July ‘Harel’ forces captured the villages of Dir-Amar (6th Battalion) and Tsor’a (4th Battalion).
On the night of 15 July a force from ‘Yiftach’ (1st Battalion) captured the village of Barafilia.
On the night of 16 July a force from ‘Yiftach’ captured the villages of Bir-Me’ayn (1st Battalion) and El-Burej (3rd Battalion), and a force from ‘Kiriyati’ took the village of Salbit.
On 16 July ‘Harel’s’ attack on ‘Cannon Ridge’, near the village of Yalu, failed.
On the night of 18 July a force from ‘Yiftach’ (1st Battalion) took the village of Shilata and the nearby Position 318 (Hirbet Korikur) but was forced to retreat the following day in the face of an attack by the Legion.
A force from the 4th Battalion took the village of Kislah.
A two-Company force from the 6th Battalion discovered the Legion’s ‘Burma Road’ to Beit-Nuba.
On the 18 July a force from ‘Harel’ captured Artuf and liberated the settlement of Hartuv.
On 18 July a force, consisting of two Cromwell tanks from the 8th Brigade and an infantry Company from ‘Yiftach’ on half-tracks, attacked the Latrun Police Station, but had to retreat.
On 18 July a force from ‘Harel’ took the village of Beit-Tul and the Positions east of Beit-Nuba. An attack on the village of Bir Abu-Lachem by the 61st Battalion was repelled.
