Medal of Valor – Zvi Zibel
The Story of the Medal of Valor.
Zvi Zibel, from the flight unit of the Palmach, participated in numerous battles during the war. The Medal of Valor was awarded him for his heroic act in a flight to the besieged Ben-Shemen:
He took off in a light plane – a 'Primus' – with supplies and ammunition and landed under enemy fire. After unloading the cargo, it was impossible to approach the plane because of the heavy fire. At his suggestion, they stood a tractor piled high with sand-bags between the plane and the enemy positions. This enabled him to start the plane, whose engine was riddled with bullets, and return to his base in Tel Aviv.
Zvi Zibel was killed on the 28.12.1948, during the 'Horev' operation that took place next to Uja el-Hafir.
