On the night of 16 July ‘Harel’ Brigade carried out an attack on ‘Cannon Ridge’. The capture of Ayalon Ridge by the 6th Battalion was planned to enable the 4th Battalion to move across it to the village of Latrun and the Police Station.
The Battalion, which had gathered at the lower pumping station and in Saris, intended to move through the difficult terrain via the Sha’ar HaGai ridge, towards the deployment position.
The assault: A Company, under the command of Lusik, was designated to capture the ridge.
B Company, under the command of Zoma (Zalman Cohen), was designated to take Orchard Summit and later to take control of the ridge east of ‘Cannon Ridge’, 50 metres lower down. The main spots on the ridge were Positions 66, 67 and 68. It fell to the Company to guard the western wing as well as the rear of A Company.
Zivi’s Company was given the task of covering the enemy by presenting a show of force towards Position 70, to divert them from the attacks of A and B Companies, and to attack ‘Cannon Ridge’ should the A Company attack fail.

The location of the HQ:
C.O. of 5th Battalion – at Position 58.
C.O. of ‘Harel’ Brigade – at a position to the north of Sha’ar HaGai.
Commander of Operation ‘Dani’ – at El Kubab.
The 4th Battalion concentrated on the area of Sha’ar HaGai and waited for the 6th Battalion to complete its attack so that they could advance via ‘Cannon Ridge’ when they had taken it.
